Keppel Sands State School has nearly formed our P &C in term 4 2024. We welcome our President Mrs O'Donnell, Vice President Mr Morris, Secretary Mrs Jenkins, parents and community members who sit on our committee.

Having a functioning Parent and Community (P&C) organization is a crucial part of a school community. Its importance can be understood through the many ways it benefits the school, students, and broader community. Here are several reasons why having a P&C is important:

1. Fosters a deeper connection between the school and the local community. They encourage parents and guardians to become more involved in their children's education, which in turn helps build a stronger partnership between families, educators, and the school administration.

2. Research shows that when parents are actively involved in their children's education, students tend to perform better academically, exhibit improved behavior, and have higher self-esteem. The P&C organization provides a structured way for parents to contribute to the school's environment and initiatives, directly benefiting students.

3. One of the most important roles of a P&C is to raise funds to support the school. Many schools rely on P&Cs to organize fundraising events, like fetes, raffles, or donation drives. These funds can be used to purchase additional resources, improve facilities, or fund extracurricular activities that are outside the school’s standard budget.

4. Act as a collective voice for parents in school decision-making processes. They provide a platform for parents to raise concerns, give feedback, and work with the school to address issues. This ensures that parents have a say in matters that affect their children’s education, from curriculum changes to school policies.

5. Contribute directly to improving the physical environment of a school, such as organizing volunteers for school cleanups or coordinating maintenance efforts. They also provide additional support to teachers and students through special programs or activities that enrich the educational experience.

7. Bring together parents, teachers, and local community members, fostering a sense of belonging and shared purpose. Events like school fairs, social nights, and parent-teacher meetups create opportunities for families to socialize, form networks, and build relationships, contributing to a positive school culture.

8. Teachers and staff benefit from the support of an active P&C group. Whether it’s through the provision of extra resources, recognition programs, or assistance with classroom activities, P&Cs help alleviate some of the pressures teachers face, allowing them to focus more on teaching.

9. Encourages volunteerism. Whether it's helping with school events, participating in decision-making, or assisting with school operations, parent volunteers can share their skills and expertise, providing invaluable assistance to the school. This also creates a culture of active citizenship that students can emulate.

10. Play a role in creating programs that focus on students’ wellbeing, mental health, and inclusivity. They can organize events that promote respect, diversity, and healthy living, helping create a more inclusive school environment for all students.

A well-established P&C can leave a lasting legacy in the school. For example, the funds raised might contribute to long-term projects such as new classrooms, playgrounds, or scholarships. Moreover, the culture of involvement and partnership fostered by an active P&C can shape the school for generations to come.

Overall, a school P&C is integral to our school’s success. It not only supports the educational experience by fundraising and advocating for students but also builds a stronger sense of community, ensures parents have a voice, and contributes to the overall wellbeing of the school environment. Whether through supporting teachers, creating inclusive programs, or advocating for better resources, the P&C plays a central role in enriching the educational experience for all involved.

Thank you to those who stepped forward to support the reformation of our schools P & C and I look forwrd to working with you.

Sam Morris

Principal
